What is Six months validity passport rule

what is the six months validity passport rule?

Many countries have a 6 months passport rule for foreign nationals arriving from overseas.

This means that the individual’s passport must continue to be valid for at least 6 months after the trip. Depending on the country, it may be 6 months from the date of arrival or from the day the holder intends to leave.

Before your next trip, make sure your passport satisfies the six month validity passport rule. As a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. Most countries will not permit a traveler to enter their country unless the passport is set to expire at least six months after the final day of travel. That means if your passport has less than six months remaining until the expiration date, you should renew it right away.

WHAT IS THE SIX MONTHS VALIDITY PASSPORT RULE?

Although many visitors travelling to the United States are required to be in possession of passports that are valid for six months beyond the period of their intended stay in the United States, Indian citizens are exempt from the six-month rule and need to only have a passport valid for their intended period of stay.

6 MONTHS VALIDITY PASSPORT RULE EXCEPTIONS

Some countries are more relaxed about the 6-month passport validity rule. Canada and Mexico are the two most commonly traveled countries that now often enforce the passport validity rule (only 3 months validity needed for Canada and Mexico). Again, please be sure to check with each countries entry and exit travel requirements before you go as the requirements are subject to change. As a general rule, you should have at least six months validity on your passport before you travel.

RENEW YOUR PASSPORT BEFORE YOUR UPCOMING TRIP

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is not renewing their passport before they travel. You will only make it as far as the airport if you do not have enough validity on your passport. We receive hundreds of phone calls every month from travelers at the airport that are being denied entry on the plane. Don’t let this happen to you. Renew your passport before your upcoming trip! Many offices offer passport expediting services as quickly as 24 hours.

Can you travel with an expired passport?

You must be eager to reap the benefits of traveling but if you're traveling internationally, not a chance. A soon-to-expire passport is already going to put your trip in jeopardy - an expired one offers virtually no chance of safe departure.

Follow the guidelines formulated by the Department of State and local authorities in your country of destination to renew your passport before your trip, whether it is expired or about to.

You do NOT want to leave the decision to let you in up to border control.

Some airlines that fly to Israel may require six months validity on your passport. Check with your airline first if you have less than 6 months passport validity.

Micronesia requires US passport holders to have four months passport validity.

Passport requirements often differ from nation to nation. Be sure to check the entry and exit requirements for each country you plan to travel as these requirements can change regularly.

Passport Expiration Renewal: How Close to Expiration Can a Passport be Renewed?

As a rule of thumb, valid passports should be renewed about 8 months prior to expiration.

Why?

Because it takes on average 2 months for passport applications to be processed. Since you want to always have a 6 months buffer to travel with some peace of mind (see Six Months Rule above), consider starting the passport renewal process 8 months before your passport expires.

How to renew an expired passport?

We have a step-by-step guide on precisely how to renew an expired passport.

You can do so either online, by mail, or in person. Our guide provides information on all these options, as well as the documents you’ll need to provide, including a valid passport photo.

Note that this is also valid if you’ve lost your passport.

What to do with your expired passport?

Even after receiving your new, valid passport, you want to be careful with that old, expired one.

First, know that even expired, your passport may serve as a proof of citizenship in most countries.

Then, and perhaps most importantly, your old passport may still contain valid visas. If that’s a case, when travelling, make sure that you carry both the valid passport and the expired one with this visa stamp.

Now, if your old expired passport no longer holds any value, don’t simply go ahead and put it in the trash. To dispose of your passport, shred or burn it first. This will prevent ill-intentioned people from making fraudulent use of it.

🙏🙏 I hope this was helpful to you ! 🙏🙏
